Working on my Novel

For many years I had dreamed of becoming a writer. I had always loved writing in school, but when I grew up and became an adult ready to write, I learned quickly that writing wasn’t a very reliable way to keep food on the table. Sure, I did give it a go, but after three months and a trip to the food bank, I realized that I needed a job that was a little more reliable. Now, nearly fifteen years later, I finally have the time to work on my novel.

Even though I don’t have the means to pursue writing full time, I no longer have to worry that my writing will starve me. I am very comfortable in my corporate job, and with the kids now in high school, I have a bit more free time on my hands. So, I have made a point of going out for coffee three times per week to have the opportunity to work on my book away from home. My progress has been a lot better than I would have guessed, and at the pace I am going, I should be able to finish my book by the end of the year.

I think that writing outside of my home has really helped me to work without distractions. I guess I feel inspired when I am sipping a hot cup of coffee, taking a drag from my E-cig and enjoying the warm sun on the patio at the cafe. In fact, I would dare say that I feel so relaxed while writing that I can focus on my writing without being encumbered with the stresses from daily life.

Provided that my novel is well received by my publisher, I may decide to write another. It feels great to finally be able to afford to be able to pursue my passion of writing. Sitting here, typing on my laptop feels just right – I am exactly where I am supposed to be.

Frustrating Crossword Puzzles

Even though it has been years since I took a spelling test in school, I still try to ensure that I know how to spell words. In a society where relying on a spell-checker is commonplace, I think that there really needs to be some emphasis on knowing how words are spelled – a spell checker is not infallible and often makes mistakes. In order to do this in some sort of efficient manner, I have made a point of working on a couple of crossword puzzles every day.

My day usually starts out with doing the crossword puzzle in the newspaper each morning. This puzzle certainly isn’t very hard, but it is a great way for me to jump start my brain in the morning. For the most part, these puzzles have had a large variety of topics that change pretty much every day, but this past week, things have been a little different.

I don’t know where they have been finding their puzzles for this last week, but the theme has been male dog names. For most people, this would be an easy subject, but for me it has been difficult. It is embarrassing to admit, but since I never had a dog of my own, I don’t know many of the names that “normal” people do. So, I have been struggling all week and I have been very frustrated.

I am hoping that the puzzles return to their usual styles next week as I am tiring of feeling frustrated each day. If there is not some sort of change soon, I might just have to go out and invest in a crossword puzzle book. I don’t want to get to the point where crossword puzzles are too frustrating to me and I no longer want to do them.
